Today, drive-thrus account for 70 percent of fast-food sales. CEO Steve Easterbrook, who took over in March, 2015, also noted Wednesday the potential for delivery, with 75 per cent of the population in the company's top five markets - including the United States - living within five kilometres of a McDonald's.

And, McDonald's also is going to expand its efforts with delivery companies, although 85 percent of its customers live within three miles of one of its restaurants.

Fast food chains like Chipotle and Burger King already offer delivery. Customers who use McDonald's kiosks will be able to pull stored order preferences and payment information.

The chain will be the latest to opt in for the increasingly popular ordering apps that are used by Starbucks, Chik-fil-A, Taco Bell and Chipotle among others.

The company's US restaurants have suffered four straight years of traffic declines, resulting in 500 million lost transactions since 2012.

The news about McDonald's home delivery comes after an ex-employee of the chain lifted the lid on what really goes on behind the scenes there.

Baltimore police officers indicted in racketeering case
Sometimes, the officers turned off their body cameras to avoid recording what they were up to, according to the indictment. But Hersl, Jenkins and Rayam took a sock containing $4,800 and removed $2,000 from it, prosecutors said.

McDonald's said the deliveries business is already a $100 billion industry.

McDonald's is trying to figure out how to keep sales growing as the all-day breakfast boost dies down, and the chain seems to have identified the next big thing: delivery. Delivering food while it's still hot (or luke warm, let's be real it's Maccas we're talking about) will not be too much of a problem.

"No other food company in the world has this reach and ability to be this convenient to so many customers through delivery", the release read, adding that it is now experimenting with different delivery models including third-party providers for ordering and fulfillment across the globe. "McDonald's is already one of the largest providers of delivered food in the world, with annual Systemwide delivery sales of almost $1 billion across various markets including China, South Korea and Singapore", it adds. McDonald's told investors that it will roll out mobile ordering, mobile pay and curbside pickup at its 14,000 USA restaurants by the end of 2017.

McDonald's shares closed up 1.1 percent on Wednesday, to $129.05.

In the US, the upgrades will be rolled out to roughly 2,500 locations by the end of this year, with most of the nation's 14,000 restaurants revamped by 2020, according to Chris Kempczinski, president of McDonald's USA.
