Average retail gas prices in northern New England haven't changed much over the past week.

And the GasBuddy.com survey found that price at ten locations around town, in Brainerd, Lookout Valley, Bonny Oaks and East Brainerd.

The average price of a gallon of gas in cities around the state includes $2.09 in Charlottesville, $2.03 in the Norfolk area, $2.07 in Richmond and $2.16 in Roanoke.

The five states where prices fell the most were Iowa (down 3.6 cents), Oklahoma (2.8 cents), Kansas (2.7 cents), SC (2.6 cents) and Wisconsin (2.6 cents).

According to a gas price report from AAA - The Auto Club Group, a "mini-collapse" experienced by the oil market last week should postpone the expected gas price hike that generally occurs each spring.

Prices locally, however, were down 2 pennies a gallon from a month ago, and Rochesterians are paying significantly less than what they were paying five years ago when gas averaged $3.95 per gallon. "I remain optimistic that the annual spring rally at the pump could be less severe than expected, but remain cautious as it remains hard to know where the new path will lead oil prices in the week ahead", DeHaan said.

The most common price across the country is $2.199, with the highest 5% of stations charging an average of $3.144 and the lowest 5% of stations charging $1.938. Today's national average is one cent less than one week ago and two cents more than one month ago.

Prices will begin to rise if West Texas Intermediate benchmark crude oil prices can get back above $50 a barrel and stay that way, Jenkins said.
