Khalid al-Barnawi, one of three Nigerians listed by the United States government as a "specially designated global terrorist", appeared alongside six other defendants, including his second wife. Other girls have escaped from the group's compound, but it is unclear how many have died while being held by them. The pair were killed by their captors in the northern city of Sokoto in March 2012 after a British-Nigerian rescue operation was launched.

Barnawi is also accused over the kidnapping of Frenchman Francis Collomp and German national Edgar Raupach. Ansaru had links to al-Qaeda in the Islamic Maghreb (AQIM) and Ansaru fighters trained in the Algerian desert with AQIM. The seven were taken to the Sambisa Forest in northeastern Nigeria, killed and buried in a shallow grave, according to the charges.

The leader of the terror group was arraigned alongside Mohammed Saleh, Umar Bello (Abu Azzan), Mohammed Salisu (Datti), Yakubu Nuhu (Bello Maishayi), Usman Abubakar (Mugiratu) and Halima Haliru, al - Barnawi's second wife in an 11 count charge.

After the defendants pleaded not guilty to the charges, the prosecution counsel, Shuaibu Labaran prayed the court for a date to commence the trial, and for the court to allow them remain in the custody of the DSS, pending the completion of their trial.

Nigeria's military announced in April past year that Barnawi was arrested in the capital of Kogi state, in central Nigeria, and described him as "on top of the list of our wanted terrorists".

"Oh! You, Buhari, you should know that these boys are your servants working for you whom you sent but Allah has exposed them", the terrorists said in the footage.
