US Soldier Killed In Afghanistan, According To Resolute Support

On Saturday, a USA military spokesman said on Twitter, that a U.S. solider was killed while conducting operations against the Islamic State in Afghanistan late Saturday.

The soldier's name hasn't been announced and no other information has been released. Those operations are sometimes carried out in conjunction with Afghan forces.

It is thought that in Afghanistan, the Sunni jihadist group is mostly based in Nangarhar and neighbouring Kunar province.

It is the first USA combat fatality in Afghanistan this year.

The soldier's death was confirmed today (8 April) by US Navy Captain Bill Salvin, who told Reuters a special forces operator had been killed.

Ten U.S. servicemembers were killed in hostile situations in Afghanistan in 2016, the last three as the result of suicide bomb attack during a Veterans Day 5K run at Bagram Air Field in November.
