More than 1.2 million viewers from around the world viewed the birth in real time.

The newborn is April's fourth calf but Animal Adventure Park's first giraffe calf.

The long-awaited offspring of internet sensation April the Giraffe is being described as strong and "very independent". Zoo owner Jordan Patch says both mom and calf are doing fine.

April's celebrity and the public fascination with her unborn calf blossomed when the zoo began providing a live YouTube stream in February.

April is also recovering well and eating heartily, her keepers report.

Almost two months after April the pregnant giraffe made her YouTube debut on February 11, she has finally delivered a healthy calf - a male.

April has her own website and even an apparel line. Calves start walking about half an hour after birth.

The weight of the newborn is unknown, but a calf at birth is usually about 6 feet tall and weighs a whopping 100 to 150 pounds.

The park is allowing people to submit and vote on names for 10 days.
