Marchers use Trump's 100th day to protest climate policies

Gale Harvey, 78, a physicist who retired from the USA space agency NASA's Langley Research Center, echoed similar sentiments, accusing the Trump administration of promoting "a lot of lies" such as downplaying the certainty of climate change science.

Her friend Kathy Goos, also of Northampton, who showed up carrying a sign reading "Alternative Energy Not Alternative Facts", agreed, calling climate change "our premium, No. 1 issue".

The article, which suggests scientists' certainty about climate change is what turns Americans away from talking about it, faced immediate criticism from many, including others at the New York Times itself.

In December 2015, the US joined almost 200 other countries to sign the Paris climate deal, aimed at keeping temperature rise within a somewhat safe level.

But he also noted a series of accomplishments that include ever-dropping costs of renewable energy production and well-paying jobs in renewable power.

Marches happened in many cities including Denver, Chicago, Washington D.C., and the Queen City.

Several hundred people marched near the Colorado Capitol and then posed in the shape of a giant thermometer for a photograph Saturday as wet snow fell.

Marchers made their way from the Federal Courthouse to the steps of City Hall, where a rally was held and a number of speeches were made.

The People's Climate March, which originated with a massive demonstration in NY in September 2014, picked a symbolically striking day for its 2017 event. Speakers included a lobsterman, a solar company owner and members of the Penobscot Nation tribe. Democratic Party Senator Bernie Sanders led a march of some 3,000 in Vermont.

"When I was a teenager and went to Lake Erie, it was one of the most polluted bodies of water in the country", he said.

One of the goals of Saturday's march, according to a Global News report, was to drum up support for candidates with a strong background in environmental policy as the USA heads toward 2018's midterm elections and the 2020 presidential race.

On Friday, the day before the Climate March to protest the Trump administration's rollbacks of former president Obama's climate change policies, the Environmental Protection Agency issued a statement announcing that its website would be "undergoing changes" to better represent the new direction the agency.

JIM KANE, BYLINE: The thousands of protesters marched along a route very similar to the one that Donald Trump's inaugural parade followed 100 days before, along Pennsylvania Avenue to the White House where the cheering came to and end.

"Trump is rolling back the regulations, he is talking about pulling out of the Paris agreement [the climate accord signed in 2015], he is trying to raise up oil and coal again, even though they are on their way out, and doing all the opposite things of what's needed", mechanical engineer Robert Siegel told AFP.
