However, yesterday at the annual Google I/O 2017 developer conference, Google unveiled an upcoming "revolutionary" standalone VR headset that aims to change that.

The first of the new Daydream headsets will be brought out by HTC and Lenovo, with HTC already having named its new headset Vive Standalone.

It'll be working with HTC and Lenovo to create the headsets, which will work without the need for any cables, PCs or peripherals.

WorldSense also builds on Google's Tango technology for augmented reality, which allows devices to track motion and understand distances and their position.

Beyond that, we can only speculate as to details such as price, availability, and power. The fruits of this multi-year effort with Google now offers customers choice in Daydream headsets - from smartphone VR to standalone VR.

Donald Trump (l.) said he planned on firing James Comey (r.) regardless of what his staff recommended. If you said he fired Comey because he's investigating Russian Federation , I'd believe you .

Facebook-owned Oculus have recognized the competition coming from Google's Daydream design and are themselves working on a standalone headset called Santa Cruz, a prototype that was briefed last fall. This makes the headset heavier and less comfortable to wear and also prevents you using VR if your phone isn't around.

The latest Daydream 2.0 Euphrates update includes support for Google Cast. The headsets are slated for release later in the year. The search engine giant is also adding new skills to the assistant, incorporating its "lens" tool, which lets people point their cameras at things to get more information about them.

Existing virtual reality initiatives require the headset to be physically connected to its host device. "The hardware is fully optimised for VR, and features a new headset tracking technology called WorldSense". It's meant to be an indoor alternative to Global Positioning System and is now being trialled in select Lowe's stores and museums. In related news, it also announced the newest version of the Android OS, the Android O, at the same conference.

If you've alienated all your local friends by making them watch you play video games, there's a new option for hanging out with other VR users.
