Utkal Express derailment: Northern Railways GM RNKulshrestha sent on leave

The Utkal Express was traveling from the eastern seaside town of Puri to the northern hill town of Haridwar when the train derailed at 5:46 p.m. local time near the town of Khatauli in Uttar Pradesh.

Chief Track Engineer, Alok Ansal, has been transferred, it added.

The number of the dead stood at 20 and those injured in the derailment in Khatauli in Uttar Pradesh on Saturday evening was 92, Mohammed Jamshed, an official of the railways traffic department, told reporters.

Four NDRF teams of skilled personnel equipped with sophisticated gas cutters, airlifting bags and other rescues material have, meanwhile, completed the work of rescue. Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath immediately spoke to the principal secretary (Home) Arvind Kumar and the District Magistrate of Muzaffarnagar and asked them to ensure that the rescue missions at Khatauli are done promptly. Maintenance of tracks is done during operations by blocking them as per requirement, according to fixed time and schedule. "Red flags are also shown to trains in case there is a problem on the tracks", he said.
